Chef Talk: Peace Peace! Welcome to CHEF TALK! Let’s get started. For those who may be discovering you for the first time, who are you and where are you from?

weirddough:Thanks so much for having me, it's a great honor! I'm weirddough and I'm from Oxnard, California. I currently live in Vegas.

Chef Talk: Dope! What’s the origin story behind your name?

weirddough: Weirddough was a play on my mental condition and a reflection of being connected as one. A safe space and symbol of perseverance and Self.

Chef Talk: Beautiful! So music provided you that space to explore and find yourself?

weirddough: Thank you! Yes, a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in the process. Music was always there and it never did me wrong. It was always therapeutic and cathartic. At times when people reach out and they express that it helped them go through what they were going through, that fulfills me. I hope to continue inspiring because that really inspires me.

Chef Talk: That’s wonderful G and keep pushing forward with your sound. Speaking of sound.. How would you describe your sound or approach to making music?

weirddough:Thanks G, I appreciate that. I would describe it as hip hop, an exaggeration of it. Experimental but still attempting to keep fundamentals and the funk.

Chef Talk: Yeah.. one of the joints that stick out to me from you is “PAINCORE” from CAS Vol. 8. It’s tufffffff!! Then goes into Gawdroll.. which is crazy! A clash of sounds that hits hard!

Chef Talk: What does your creative process usually look like?

weirddough: Thanks a ton family!! I really had fun with those! Gawdroll was a fun one too, I've been trying to experiment with more keys lately!

Usually I would chop some drums, create a loop or play them. Then sample a record, tape, anything online then chop that over the drums and resample it. Then once I got the skeleton I would mess with a bassline or other keys to add nuance. Then textures, blips, etc. Then finally an effect chain to get it the way I want it to sound sonically.

Making the skeleton is quick, the textures, resampling effects, and final touches are more time consuming.

 

Chef Talk: Yeah.. I can hear the fun and good energy in the music. Speaking of sampling, what’s the most crazy thing you’ve sampled? One of the homies I know sampled from vhs tapes. S/O Moe Sample!

weirddough:That's ill! Much respect and salute to Moe Sample! I would say sampling a Dreamcast, Radio, or DVD player haha. Foley sounds are fun too, like pouring water in a cup or making sounds out of random objects.

Chef Talk: That’s so ill! What artists, producers, DJs, or albums are you listening to right now?

weirddough: Thanks G! I've been listening to Fat Ray's projects lately. Food From the Gods and Perseus are in rotation. I've been bumping a lot of Boogie, Disco, and Funk as well. I've been revisiting a lot of Kankick's beat tapes, and old tapes from bandcamp.

I love going back to Ohbliv's beat tapes as well.

Chef Talk: Ha! The homie Noewan just shouted out Fat Ray’s album in Pieces 01. 

What’s one piece of music you’ve made that you feel really represents who you are?

weirddough: The tape I did with Paxico, Love Spells felt like a magnum opus for me, BUT Geomancy was the one. There was a huge gap between the two projects, but I feel that tape translated into an idea that I've been wanting to create for a long time.

 And major shout to my brother Noewan I bump him heavily, and that's one of my best friends.

 

Chef Talk: S/O to Noewan! What’s something you want to accomplish with your music that you haven’t done yet?

weirddough: Big shouts to fam! I would like to rock a set in Japan! It's always been one of my dream destinations to visit!

Chef Talk: Definitely will happen for you. Claiming it now!

 What are you currently working on? What’s on the plate for you next?

weirddough: I appreciate that big time G!

I am working on collaboration projects with my brother ABGOHARD, and another beat tape. If things go well, I want to drop a rap album that I've been working on.

Hopefully this year.
